Stress is something that affects everyone in a variety of capacities, and mitigating that stress can be difficult at times. However, there are simple ways that you can overcome stress and go on with your daily life. Here are a few everyday techniques that can help alleviate stress as it happens.
1. Get in a Good Workout
When we get stressed out, we initiate “fight or flight” hormones that cause our heart to start beating faster. Regardless of whether or not our stress is caused by something life-threatening or something as simple as trying to make that last light to get to work on time, the receptors in our brain fire the same way. To mitigate this, try getting in a good workout every day to burn off those hormones.
Go for a run around your neighborhood, swim some laps at your pool, or attend a yoga class with your friends. If you don’t have the time to work out, try to wake up in the morning to get some exercise in or walk laps during your lunch break.
2. Try to Stay Away From Caffeine, Alcohol, and Nicotine
Both caffeine and nicotine are stimulants that aren’t conducive to relieving stress, but did you know that small amounts of alcohol are also considered stimulants? Reconsider that small glass of wine to help you take the edge off from a long day and go for a calming tea instead. Not only is this choice healthier, but it will likely help you get a better night’s sleep.
3. Use a Stress Reduction Technique
If you find yourself a little on edge after a particularly stressful meeting, consider performing a relaxation technique to help reduce stress. For example, focus on a word or phrase that evokes positivity, like “calm” or “peace.” Think about that word for as short as two minutes or as long as 10. Even if your mind starts to wander, bring yourself back to that word. What’s great about this technique is that it can be performed anywhere—your desk, your car, your home—and give you the mental relief you need.
In addition to having a positive word to focus on to help relieve stress, you may want to create a special spot in your home to visit when you need a moment to breathe. According to House Method, having a place in your home dedicated to peace and relaxation can bring you back to center and calm you down when you’re overwhelmed.
4. Learn to Say “No”
More often than not, we find ourselves stressed because we bit off more than we could chew. Know your limits in your work and home life and if you find yourself maxing out on bandwidth or juggling five different things at once, say no to other requests, especially if they’re low priority.
5. Talk to Someone
If you find yourself constantly stressed out or anxious for no apparent reason, make sure you find someone to talk to. This could be a close friend, a family member, or a therapist. Regardless of who you choose, be sure to verbally get out some of the stressors in your life. It’s always positive and healthy to speak your thoughts and discuss causes of stress and ways to find a release.
